SG50 @ Bishan Park

It began pouring with thunder at 7pm when I was in a taxi and on my way to Bishan Park to help Dave and Gary with our public outreach session last Saturday. We thought it'd be great to setup there as the expected crowd numbers will soar because of the SG50 concert that was being held directly opposite of where we were.

A message came via Whatsapp while I was still in the taxi. Dave and Ava had sought refuge from the rain at a nearby housing estate. So, I informed the cab driver of the new destination.

Met the both of them there and they told me Gary was at the park's Macdonald's. I was surprised to see Jason and his girlfriend, Amanda, seeking shelter at the housing estate together with Dave and Ava.

That was also the first time I met a new friend. His name is Valdric and he has this intriguing telescope that has Wifi function and its motion can be controlled by a mobile phone.

Luckily for us, the rain stopped after awhile. Jason and his girlfriend left for dinner. Dave, Ava, and I went over to Macdonald's to look for Gary and he was there slicing up new name cards that came with a QR code which he had designed himself. Gary also showed us his "new" 80mm refractor telescope. It's a long, bright yellow tube that looked cute in some way.

The clouds began to slowly dissipate and all of us went to setup our equipment. I had the honour of opening Valdric's telescope case and had a look at the equipment before he set it up.

Uncle Wayne came later with his binoculars and helped us entertained the crowd.

Some of us were looking at Jupiter, some at Orion's Nebula. When the SG50 concert ended, huge crowds started pouring in. Gary signaled for them to come over to have a peek through the telescopes. We had a busy field day showing and explaining to people what they were seeing. We were also being constantly mistaken as part of the SG50 concert tie up, which we were not. Ha ha.

The rain clouds came in and blanketed the entire sky again at about 11pm and there was nothing to be seen, not even Jupiter. We thought it was best to pack up and then have supper before heading back home.

To sum it up, it was a tiring but rewarding sidewalk session.

Here are some pictures that Gary took at the sidewalk session.
